In 2020, a news story hit me like a ton of bricks. A father, struggling to provide for his family, had resorted to stealing a phone. Not for himself, but for his child, just so they could keep up with online classes. It was heartbreaking. Here was someone, a parent like any other, making an impossible choice—sacrificing his dignity because a simple piece of technology had become essential for his kid’s education. And the worst part? It wasn’t a one-off story. I kept hearing more and more of the same—families taking out loans, selling what little they had, all just to get a phone or tablet to keep their kids learning during the pandemic.
It was like a punch to the gut. I thought about my own situation. Sure, I’d been frustrated with slow Wi-Fi, like most of us were, but in reality, I had everything I needed and more. And then I remembered something—I had this old phone sitting in a drawer. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it worked. It could easily be enough to help someone, even just one kid, stay connected and keep up with school. So, I decided to give it away.
I didn’t expect anything to come of it. It was a simple act—a small thing, really—but it snowballed in a way I never imagined. I told a few friends about what I’d done, and before I knew it, people were reaching out to me, asking if they could help too. They wanted to donate their old devices or contribute in some way. Suddenly, this little idea I had was turning into something much bigger. I found myself organizing an entire initiative, coordinating donations, working out logistics, researching affordable phones, and trying to make sure every single contribution made a difference.
What really amazed me was how quickly a community formed around this effort. Friends started jumping in, offering their time, skills, and resources to help keep things running smoothly. We decided to call ourselves Youth.aim. I know, it sounds a bit cheesy, but it captured what we were about—young people, aiming to make a difference. It wasn’t just about handing out phones. We wanted to make sure that every child who needed access to education could get it, and that meant thinking about the bigger picture.
With the generous donations received, we purchased phones to distribute to verified children in need, ensuring the stay connected to their education
Before long, we had an artist design a logo, and even a musician create a theme song for us (yes, that really happened). We started partnering with local businesses and organizations, and eventually, even got the attention of bigger names like Futurae, who were interested in collaborating with us. It was incredible to see how much support we were getting. Everyone wanted to do their part.
Looking back, it’s crazy to think that all of this started with a single, beat-up phone and a news story that broke my heart. What it showed me is that even the smallest actions can create a ripple effect. You never know how far a single act of kindness can go. And when people come together, united by a shared purpose, we really can achieve some amazing things.
We delivered phones to children in Tasikmalaya, one of our key focus areas, helping them stay connected to their education.
If you’re curious to hear more about the full story, including all the twists, turns, and funny moments along the way, I sat down for an interview on Spotify 103.sembilan. We dive into everything—the highs, the challenges, and the unexpected collaborations that came from this journey. It’s a bit of a long listen, but I promise, it’s worth it. You’ll get a real sense of just how powerful community can be when it’s driven by empathy and the simple desire to do good.
This whole experience has reinforced what I’ve always believed: kindness isn’t just about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the small things—the old phone you don’t need anymore, the few hours you give up to help someone—that can have the biggest impact. And when we all pitch in, we can make a real difference in the lives of others, one step at a time.
